This deck was designed by Alister Crowley and painted by Lady Frieda Harris, the deck was referred to by Crowley as the "Book of Thoth" and he published a book with that title for instructions on the decks use. The deck was set out to be a six month endeavour just to update and add some of the symbolism others decks lacked in his opinion, he warranted Lady Harris in this undertaking and they embarked on a journey that would engulf them for 5 years from 1938 - 1943. The designing of the cards became so meticulous that Crowley insisted some of the cards be painted over up to eight times before he and Lady Harris were satisfied. The deck never saw the light of day in either of the original laborers lifetimes but until 1969 when a student or follower of Crowley published his and Lady Harris's work. The first print was of inferior quality and until 1977 when the paintings where rephotographed and then again in 1986 they where hard to make out but the cards we see today are sharp and detailed. The purpose Crowley had in mind was to incorporate symbolism from all sects and disciplines and to tie in a diverse occult knowledge.
